A large proportion of the rural population has insufficient access to drinking water
Official reports suggest that some 47 million Ethiopians do not have access to safe water, and 61 million people have no access to sanitation facilities; making the rural water supply and sanitation coverage of the country among the lowest in the world. Like in many other parts of Ethiopia, the people in Kembata & Tembaro (KT) region are committed to making a difference in their own situation, and very keen to adopt new technologies that would improve their livelihood. Yet, they are often challenged by many factors related to shortage of water.
Generally, the problems in water sector can be put in three categories: lack of adequate water sources, lack of clean water that can be consumed without risk of harm and lack of access to available water supplies.
